Multi-year pledges are very important, not only because they show the on-going passion of alumni for the College, but also because, unlike a single year gift, they enable the College to count on future contributions during the budgeting process. Therefore, it is critical that the Development office has a clear understanding of all pledges, that the College receives pledge payments during the expected fiscal year, and that Olin alumni understand the Multi-year Pledge Policy.

Class Gift Descriptions

Class of 2011 - Project-based Curriculum Fund

The members of the Class of 2011 established a fund to endow and support a project-based curriculum at Olin College. It is their wish that the gift fund and the future endowment work to support the expansion of the project-based curriculum at Olin, by supporting materials and equipment for class projects.

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $620.

Class of 2010 - Passionate Pursuits Fund

The members of the Class of 2010 established a fund to endow the Passionate Pursuits Program at Olin College. It is their wish that the endowment works to support the already existing program at the College by providing augmented funding for students to have the opportunity to pursue their personal artistic, humanistic, philanthropic, and technical interests. Funds will be used in accordance with the policies established by the Passionate Pursuits Board, overseen by the Office of Student Life.

Latest Update (as of 6.24.11): Ilana Walder-Biesanz, '13 shares her Passionate Pursuit experience thanks to funding from this class gift..."For the past three semesters, I have used the support of the Passionate Pursuit program to help me in my study of classical voice (that is, singing opera). I had been interested in musical theater all my life, but my interest in opera developed at the end of high school. While I attended (and still attend) many operas, I never had the chance to learn to sing opera before Olin. Now I work with a wonderful teacher at Wellesley to learn proper technique and build my repertoire. I’ve worked on art songs, arias and duets in English, Italian, German and French. (To help facilitate this, I’ve taught myself Italian and German.) I perform at least one song at Expo every semester, and recently have also begun participating in Wellesley works-in-progress concerts and exploring competition opportunities.I don’t have photos per se, but I do have a video of my performance at the most recent Expo. I still have a long way to go, but two years ago I would not have had the range or control to sing this aria without hurting my voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clK24gvAdEk."

(as of 4.13.11): The Passionate Pursuits Program has become more popular with each passing year. During the 2010-11 academic year, 127 Pursuits were approved for credit by the Passionate Pursuits Board executive committee (two faculty members and Rod Crafts).  Of the 127 approved Pursuits, 81 received small funding allocations from the full Passionate Pursuits Board (four students appointed by CORe, two faculty members and Rod). Support from the Class of 2010 will supplement the existing College budget for Passionate Pursuits.

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $7,374.

Class of 2009 - Stockrooms Fund

The members of the Class of 2009 established a fund to endow the stockrooms at Olin College. It is their wish that the endowment works to support the already existing stockrooms at the College by providing freely available consumable goods free for student use.

Latest update (as of 12.13.11): This year’s gift has been used to contribute to the purchase of a small paint booth in the ME stockroom and the accessories associated with it. Students now have 24 X 7 access to the small paint booth and a safe place for painting their projects.  In addition, two customized, portable  project tables were built and are available for student use in the hallway near the machine shop. These tables accommodate those students who are working on projects that require they be close to the shop to make frequent trips in and out the shop. It gives them a properly equipped and safe workspace, does not impair hallway traffic and lets others enjoy seeing a work in progress.

(as of 6.14.11): The card access door to the existing ME stockroom has been successfully installed. Unfortunately the inventory control system, purchased to better manage the supplies and needs of the students, did not work as planned. The Academic Facilities Committee will brainstorm a new system in the next academic year.

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $6,879.

Class of 2008 - Sports and Recreation Fund

The members of the Class of 2008 established a fund to endow the Sports and Recreation Program at Olin College. It is their wish that the endowment works to support the sports and recreation program at the College. Funds will be administered by the Office of Student Life and are intended for the purchase of goods and services which contribute toward sports activities and other recreation of Olin students. Until this endowment is large enough to fund the total cost of the Program, a portion of the gifts received each year will be used to provide up to $2,500 a year for the Sports and Recreation Program at Olin. Below is a summary of sports and recreation initiatives this fall and spring. While the Class Gift is the major source of funding for many of the activities and events below, students continue to pay out of pocket for much of what they do. CORe and the College also help subsidize these activities when possible.

Latest Update (12.21.11): The Olin Soccer and Ultimate team enjoyed an amazing fall semester. The Division 1 Men’s Soccer team finally won the championship after knocking on the door three years in a row. The team won 5-2 with strong performances by Fran Balestra (Class of 2012), Elliot Weis (Class of 2015), and Erik Kolker (Class of 2013). The men’s team also included three players from Babson this year, another first. Both men’s teams look forward to another great season next fall. The women’s soccer team, which was coached by John Smith (legendary kicker for the New England Patriots and professional soccer player in Europe), had its best season yet. The team, which included players from Babson and Wellesley, set new standards for the team with consistent practices and a couple of wins this season. Thanks to Sam Yang (Class of 2013) and some passionate players from Wellesley and Babson, the women’s team is now well established. The ultimate teams enjoyed a busy fall with several tournaments. With AJ coaching again (AJ is also the Hall Director of EH now) and another solid group of first years playing, the team enjoyed some great games. The team saw a close contest with WPI, and prevailed to win 13-11. The team also brought their “A” game against Brandeis, last year’s open sectionals champions. In a hard fought game, Olin lost on the final point by a score of 13-12. The woman enjoyed a big win against Northeastern and enjoys a consistent turn-out at practices. As for action off the pitch, new weight racks were installed in EH, the WH equipment room saw a major makeover, and students floated the idea of a temporary ice-skating area between EH and WH near the grills. Stay tuned for the next update! “On behalf of all the coaches, players, and students at Olin, we thank you for your support! We would not be where we are without you!” Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life.

(as of 6.1.11): Here's a link to compiled pictures from this past semester. The following are some student quotes sharing how gifts to this fund made a big impact on their Olin experience: “I came to Olin expecting to lose the part of me growing up that was organized sports. Thankfully Olin had a soccer team that I could join and it was just what I was looking for. ” - Marco Morales, ‘11 “Soccer has been a great way to make friends with similar interests at Olin and is also a great way to stay in shape.  Without soccer and Frisbee, Olin would have no organized sports, which would not only deter potential students, but also undermine the quality of living for current students.” - Richard Pratt, ’12 “YOU'RE THE BOMB.COM!  Seriously, any support we get really means a lot.  Between league fees, gas, coaching, equipment, uniforms etc., having a team can quickly become expensive. Soccer means a lot to all of us, and your generous support makes our mere existence possible. THANK YOU!” - Sam Yang, ‘13

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $8,518.

Class of 2007 - Green Initiatives Fund

The members of the Class of 2007 established a fund to endow green (sustainability) initiatives at Olin College. To be sustainable, nature’s resources must only be used at a rate at which they can be replenished naturally. To that end, the Class of 2007 has requested that a committee be formed to select projects that will receive funding in an effort to making Olin College’s activities more sustainable. Until the endowment is large enough to fund the total cost of the Program, a portion of the gifts received each year will be used to provide up to $2,500 a year for sustainability projects at Olin.

Last update (6.13.11): Click here for updated photos of progress made on projects funded by this fund. From Ben Chapman, ’14Money from the Green Initiatives fund made it possible to finish Olin's first renewable energy installation on campus.  Approved funding was used to purchase the battery for Olin's "solar island," an off-grid set of solar panels mounted on a sun-tracking pole behind the dorms.  The solar island now has two outlets that offer up to 600W of power for students (or alumni) to use whenever.  We are planning a movie night to showcase the system, bringing out a projector and sound equipment and powering everything from our battery, charged by the sun.  In the future, the panels may help power the proposed "living laboratory" building, a combined greenhouse and lab which is proposed to be built right next to the panels.  The system should last over twenty years, continuing to be a visible icon of Olin's commitment to the environment.  Thanks again!

From Prof. Art MacCarley…I want to sincerely thank those who gave to this fund. Thanks to approved funding that we received for the "Automotive Technologies for a Sustainable Future" class, we were able to purchase components, specifically the 5kW diesel generator, that were used in attempting to convert to operation on dim ethyl ether.  Although the class didn't complete this work, the project provided great experience for the students, which was the ultimate project objective.

Colby Sato, ’14 is still in the planning stages of his project.

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $19,420.

Class of 2006 - Summer Book Program Fund

The members of the Class of 2006 established a fund to endow Olin College's Summer Book Program. Until the endowment is large enough to fund the total cost of the Program, a portion of the gifts received each year will be used to support the purchase and distribution of the books as well as any costs associated with the annual convocation event during the opening week of school where the book is discussed.

Latest Update (as of 12.13.11):  Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Steve Schiffman approved the recommendation of the Summer Book Program Advisory Committee to use Rob Martello's Midnight Ride, Industrial Dawn as the book for 2011 summer reading. This is another first for the book program -- two years ago, for the first time, we had the author speak at the Convocation; last year, for the first time, we used a work of fiction; and this year, for the first time, we are using a book by an Olin faculty member. Thanks to Committee members:  Rachel Bobbins '13, Rod Crafts, Allen Downey, Casey Karst '13, Alyssa Levitz '11, Dee Magnoni, Chris Marra '12 and Ilana Walder-Biesanz '13. And thanks to members of the Olin community who recommended 64 books for the Committee's consideration. The Convocation on Midnight Ride, Industrial Dawn was held on September 1 in the Milas Hall Auditorium and featured Rob, faculty colleague Jon Stolk, and Paul Revere House Executive Director Nina Zannieri.  Attending were 245 students, three faculty members, two administrators, and two parents.

(as of 6.30.11): FY11 fundraising results for this fund = $13,863.
