CW2 is officially more than halfway over. WOW!
This has been the absolute embodiment of "trial by
fire". When I started at Olin, I heard a lot of rumors about Candidates Weekend
that were told with the same sense of awe and foreboding that one might use
when talking about Sasquatch, or the Mole People of New York City. CW is
legendary on the Olin campus. It is, as Dean Nolan says in his introduction,
one Olin's most cherished traditions.
Candidates Weekend. The myth, the legend.
It's how amazing what a juggling act the weekend
turns out to be. There are so many moving parts, so many activities and panels
and presentations and shows that it feels near-impossible to keep them all
straight in my head. But it is also a little bit of a miracle that every single year, Candidates Weekend is
At the end of the day, it's a chance for the entire
campus community- faculty, staff, students - to rally and showcase our school
at its finest. Our clubs get to perform, our faculty members get to share their
research projects and interests, the parents get to meet other parents and ask
their worrisome parenting questions (Extra-long sheets for the dorm room beds? How's
the food on campus?) and most of all, we get to meet 250 wonderful Candidates
who blew us away with their applications. It's incredible to watch everyone come together, year after year, and celebrate the college that we know and love. I don't know of any schools that
practice a tradition like Candidates Weekend - it's such an "Olin-esque" event...
and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Not to get weird, but Candidates Weekend is sort of
like witnessing a first date. The Candidate is getting to know Olin, and Olin
is getting to know the Candidate. They talk a little, tell some jokes, share
some dinner, maybe catch a movie (Under the Boardwalk, anyone?). Sometimes, there sparks just aren't there, and the two go their separate
ways. But sometimes, the two fall in love! And I have to tell you, watching a
Candidate fall in love with Olin, and then knowing how great a fit they'd be on
campus and how successful they'd be as a student - well, it's magic.
Has two hearts. Falls in love twice as hard.
So we've got one day left of CW2, and CW3 is on the
horizon. I can tell you all, prospective parents, family members, and
Candidates, it has been a sheer delight having you on campus.
