Happy New Year 2012! I hope you had a satisfyingly-fun celebration with friends and family. If you made some new year resolutions, I hope you take up the challenge and keep resolving them. If they aren't that great, enjoy breaking them.
I'm currently back at home in Chennai, India enjoying a pretty 'chilly' winter (by which I mean 80 degree weather). In two weeks, I'll be leaving to Illinois to Study Away at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)! I'm excited for new college experiences, especially since I'll be going from a 330-student school to one with 33,000+ students!
I chose to go to UIUC because I really want to experience a big university in the States. Olin is a 330-student engineering college, and it really is a one-of-a-kind experience. I am curious as to the feel of a University with: a lot more students who aren't all engineering majors, with other Colleges on the same campus, with shared bathrooms for each floor, and with 10 different Dining Halls to choose from every day. As an international student who isn't planning on doing a Masters or PhD program immediately after Olin, I think this might be my one chance to to go a 'real school', as it might be called.
On a more academic note, at Olin we are required to do a Humanities/Entrepreneurship capstone and I'm doing mine in Pychology. I'm taking some of these classes at the College of Liberal Arts at UIUC - namely, Personality Psychology and Social Cognition. I'm also doing a Political Science course on Politics in Developing Nations and 2 Engineering courses in this Spring semester
All in all, I'm excited for this well-rounded Humanities & Engineering course load in the coming semester. I'm excited to meet a lot of new faces, many of which I probably won't be seeing every day (something to get used to, huh?). I'm excited to go to Illinois basketball games and sit in lecture halls with 200+ students. I guess I'm excited to experience the experiences of many of my friends that are in big schools in the USA. In about ten days, I'll be at UIUC and I'll be blogging about my experiences =)
In other news, I recently purchased a Nikon DSLR camera and I've been taking some pretty cool pictures at home. A few of them are below. I'm currently experimenting with shutter speed, aperture, and light sensitivity, so I'm still at the beginner's stage. I'm hoping I get better with practice.
Let me know what you think of them! Ariana ('15), a fellow blogger, is holding an Olin Photo Exhibition along with other students this coming semester. I'm hope to submit some photos to it. If you have the chance, please stop by the exhibit. We have some pretty talented student photographers at Olin; their pictures turn out to be really nice.
For now, adios folks. I'll write again when I'm at UIUC!
