Funding for Graduate School

Funding for graduate school can comes in many forms. It’s worth the time it takes to do research; there is funding available, but often you have to apply for it and those applications may take a bit of work.

You will need to first apply for the FAFSA. This could provide you with grants or loans.

If you are applying to graduate school in the STEM field, you should apply to the National Science Foundation and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (for PhDs only).

Common funding sources:

  • Graduate/teaching assistantship in exchange for working in an office or teaching courses at the institution

  • Research assistantship in exchange for working in a lab

  • Departmental scholarships

Check out the Scholarships and Fellowships tab for information on additional funding opportunities.
