Olin College Summer Experience in Education Research

Instructions for Letters of Reference

Thank you for writing a letter of reference for an applicant to the Olin College Summer Program for Research in Engineering Education, a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates/Research Experiences for Teachers (REU/RET) Site.

Olin College is engaged in an ambitious research program to understand and improve the educational experience of engineering undergraduates. The goal of this REU/RET Site is to advance this work by providing undergraduate students and K-12 teachers the opportunity to become part of a learning community in engineering education through collaborative, faculty-mentored research and formative activities including a short course in educational research methods. Past Olin College student researchers have found that such research experiences give them new perspectives on the field of engineering and on their own educational experiences. More information on the Olin College REU/RET program in engineering education can be found at reu.olin.edu.

Please e-mail your response to the prompts below to ret@olin.edu, with the name of the applicant and their home institution in the subject line. The letter is due by 11:59 pm EST on February 17th, 2015. You may be contacted to verify authenticity.

What is your name, title, and institutional affiliation?

How long have you known the applicant, and in what capacity?

Please tell us more about the applicant. We are particularly interested in the following:

• Please comment on the applicant’s motivation and background for engaging in research in engineering education.

• How do you believe the program will facilitate the professional development of the applicant?

• How do you think this applicant will be able to positively contribute to the program?

As much as you can, please draw on specific experiences and share examples.

Thank you!
