Olin College Summer Experience in Education Research
Instructions for Letters of Reference
Thank you for writing a letter of reference for an applicant to the Olin College Summer Program for Research in Engineering Education, an NSF REU program.
Olin College is engaged in an ambitious research program to understand and improve the educational experience of engineering undergraduates. The goal of this REU Site is to advance this work by providing undergraduate students and K-12 teachers the opportunity to become part of a learning community in engineering education through collaborative, faculty-mentored research and formative activities including a short course in educational research methods. Olin College student researchers have found that such research experiences give them new perspectives on the field of engineering and on their own educational experiences. More information on the Olin College REU program in engineering education can be found at reu.olin.edu.
Please e-mail your response to the prompts below to firstname.lastname@example.org, with the name of the applicant and their home institution in the subject line. The letter is due by 11:59 pm EST on February 17th, 2015. Faculty members who submit letters of reference may be contacted to verify authenticity.
What is your name, title, and institutional affiliation?
How long have you known the applicant, and in what capacity?
Please tell us more about the student. We are particularly interested in the following:
• How well-suited is the student to do research in engineering education, and why? Please comment on their initiative, ability to work independently, to work in teams, and their communication skills.
• How do you believe the program will facilitate the personal, academic, or professional development of the student?
• How do you think this student will be able to positively contribute to the program?
As much as you can, please draw on specific experiences and share examples.
Thank you for your time.
