2018 Schaffner Concert at Olin to Feature Classic, Contemporary Works

Duo pianists Jongsun Lee and Hyunjung Kim will perform a program of classic and contemporary works at Olin College Monday, July 30, at 3:00 pm. The concert, part of the Ann Schaffner Concert Series at Olin, will feature four-hand piano music by Mozart, Brahms, Piazzolla and Hyeun-Mi Won, along with the world premiere of a new work by Diana Dabby.

A native of South Korea, Jongsun Lee began playing piano at age 6. A specialist in contemporary music, she has won numerous competitions, including a 2013 Invited Artist Solo Concert sponsored by Youngsan Art Hall in Seoul, Korea. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 as a second place winner of the American Protégé International Piano Competition. This is her second appearance in the Ann Schaffner Concert Series.

A solo pianist, collaborative artist and a teaching professional, pianist Hyunjung Kim made her first solo debut at the age 12, performing with an orchestra at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. She has performed at major venues throughout the US, Europe and South Korea as a solo recitalist and a collaborative artist.

The concert will include a work by composer Hyeun-Mi Won, whose “Tree, Moon and White Birds” for four hands from 2013 was inspired by the famous Korean oil painter Jung-Seob Lee’s painting of the same name. The suite is divided into five movements: a Forest, a Tree, the Moon, White Birds, and Soaring.

Diana Dabby is a faculty member and the music program director at Olin College of Engineering. Her work, “Ponti di Vista” for solo piano and soundtrack, was written for this concert at Jongsun Lee’s request. It comprises three parts:  Mescolare (Mashup), Macchina, Tristezza, as well as their variations.  It is the only solo piece on the program.

This concert is the fifth in the Ann Schaffner Concert Series, named in memory of former Olin staff member Ann Schaffner and made possible through a generous gift by Stu Schaffner. The concert will take place in the Milas Hall mezzanine at Olin College, 1000 Olin Way, Needham, Massachusetts. For more information, call 781-292-2255.
