Seniors: What you should be doing RIGHT NOW

It’s the summer before your senior year of high school and, more specifically, it’s the week before the Common Application opens. So from my seat- that is from the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid seat-what should you be doing when it comes to the college search and application process RIGHT NOW?

  • Reading a book for pleasure
  • Swimming in the ocean, a lake, a pool, a pond, a kiddie pool J
  • Taking your mom out for breakfast
  • Hanging out with your friends
  • Building (another) trebuchet for fun
  • Reading another book for pleasure
  • Binge watching something amazing on Netflix
  • Running (for the first time ever or running somewhere new)
  • Learning a new skill (crocheting perhaps? Welding? Cooking? Doing your own laundry?)
  • Playing all your favorite board games
  • Taking leisurely bike rides
  • Reading another book for pleasure
  • Taking your dad out for breakfast
  • Going sailing
  • Being a tourist in your own city or town

In short: enjoy yourself and spend time with loved ones. There is plenty of time for the college application process in the coming months. Don’t regret missing that drive-in movie, that ice cream cone, or singing your favorite song at the top of your lungs with your best friend in the car with the windows down.

I’ll be back in the next few weeks with more application-specific advice, but for now: get off the Internet and play!
