Oliners Awarded Fulbright

Oliners Awarded Fulbright

An Olin alumnus and an Olin senior have been awarded funding to pursue graduate study and teach English around the world through the prestigious U.S. Fulbright Student Program.

Gretchen Rice ’20 has been awarded the English Language Assistantship (ETA) to Taiwan. “I am really excited about the Fulbright because I believe it is an incredible experience that will allow me to create meaningful relationships and build my cultural understanding”, said Rice. “While I am disappointed that I won’t get the full year experience, I know that the time I do have in Taiwan will be incredibly meaningful and impactful.”

Olin alumnus Annie Zeng ’16 will spend a year in graduate school in the Netherlands for her Fulbright. “My mind has always been drawn to the perspectives by which practitioners of different fields view the world. The Fulbright grant will enable me to pursue a research masters in Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology at Maastricht University while immersing myself in artistic and technological communities within the Netherlands,” says Zeng. “In many ways, my Olin education, with its self-directed, hands-on approach, set the foundation for my ability to pursue interdisciplinary work in my career.”

As the flagship international exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. government, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, founded in 1946, is designed to build relationships between Americans and people in more than 140 countries across the globe, to collectively address global challenges and work toward world peace.

This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic Fulbright has decided to delay the start of these grants to January 2021 instead of September.

Assistant Director of Post-Graduate Planning and Fulbright Program Advisor Aarti Chellakere said, “We are incredibly proud of our finalists! They worked diligently on every component of their applications since the prep program kick-off in March to meet the Fulbright deadline in October. Olin students are prepared to live as engaged global citizens, and we are excited for their upcoming Fulbright experiences.”
