We receive many inquiries throughout the year from curious students, excited to learn more about our wonderful institution. These questions range from broad to specific, questions like do you have a library (yes), can I visit campus (also, yes), what division NCAA are you (we are not accredited, but we do have intramural and club sports), does the dining hall have gluten-free options (they sure do!), and can I transfer in (not exactly, but yes).

These questions and many more got us thinking about the inquiries that stand out the most and how those highlight the uniqueness of our community:
Does Olin require a certain number of years of foreign language? No, but while foreign language is not required, most of our applicants have taken it in high school. If you choose not to take foreign language, we encourage you to round out your academic schedule with other rigorous courses - in arts, humanities and social sciences, as well as in STEM courses. Speaking a second language is a great tool for an engineer!
While at Olin, can I study abroad? Yes, we call it studying away. This means you can study domestically (at a school with significantly different offerings from Olin) or internationally. Both experiences help broaden your horizons and build your network.
Can I commute to campus if I live nearby? No, given that we are a residential community, the commuter lifestyle doesn’t quite fit with our collaborative, on-campus experience. However, even first years can bring cars to campus if they are fortunate enough to have one. So, if you don't have a car -- don't worry! Oliners are great about sharing rides with one another, plus there are public transportation options nearby and a shuttle service to our BOW (Babson and Wellesley College) partners. It's easy to get around!
What if I have advanced beyond Calculus, will I still be academically challenged? Absolutely! Our Quantitative Engineering Analysis course covers it all and gives you a chance to excel in whatever area best fits your skillset. If you do feel confident with the material, it’s a great opportunity to help support your classmates’ learning as well.
Can I double major at Olin? No, and we also don't offer official minors, either, but there are various concentrations you can dig into. Since we have three main majors, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, plus Engineering with a concentration, you can specialize in ways that may further advance your career goals. Students can even enhance their curricular horizons by cross-registering for classes at Babson and Wellesley Colleges.
Could I be an engineer at Olin who enjoys visual or performing arts? Totally, and many Oliners do. We have clubs like OFAC, OCO, FWOP and more that give you the creative outlet you may be looking to continue from high school and perhaps some new experiences as well.
