Hi first years, my name is Pippin. I am in class of 2029, and I am writing to give you some advice for your first year at Olin! Here are seven pieces of advice I would give my former self on my first day:

1. Orientation can be busy.

If you are getting overwhelmed, talk to your OA about what's required and what is strongly recommended and do not be ashamed to take a break.

2. Get a Tutor.

Tutors are available to all students! If you need or want more one-on-one help, or even someone to schedule with to make sure you do your work and or do not get stuck, tutoring is an amazing resource. You can get a fellow student to tutor you for as many classes as you want.

3. Try lots of activities in your first semester.

Your first semester is pass/no record meaning no one GPA grades. You will either pass the class or it will never appear on your final transcript. Sample clubs and other activities to see how much you can handle. It's okay to do a little over booking in your first semester so you don't accidentally take on too much in future semesters.

4. Go into the lounges.

Entire friend groups form around lounge culture and you will make some really close connections if you put yourself out there.

5. Do not marry your major.

Be open to change. Lots of people come in knowing exactly what they want to do and that's great, but avoid saying “no” to interesting opportunities just because you feel they do not perfectly align with your major idea. It's also totally okay to come here and have no clue what you want to do. You are here to find out.

6. Talk to your SIBB(s)!

SIBBs are students from other grades who are paired with you to build a bridge to the freshman class from the other classes. SIBB stands for Students Intentionally Building Bridges are great friends and general resources. Getting involved at Olin can feel overwhelming at times. Reach out, ask questions or share worries. SIBBs are great.

7. Join the mailing list Carpe Diem.

Carpe Diem is great to hear about things going on and sometimes you can get free food.

Welcome to Olin; you are going to do great here and we are very happy to have you!
