CT Patient-Operator Intercom

As a leading global medical technology and digital solutions innovator, GE Healthcare enables clinicians to make faster, more informed decisions through intelligent devices, data analytics, applications and services – supported by its Edison intelligence platform. Computed Tomography (CT) scanners achieve all this, providing highly detailed images and information to help clinicians diagnose and monitor patients as well as identify the best form of treatment.

However, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals were challenged to establish new protocols to acquire the images and information needed to care for patients, while maintaining evolving social distancing and safety best practices. Many responded with protocols whereby CT scanner technicians do not interface with patients directly to help reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission.

To address this new workflow and improve the patient experience, a multi-disciplinary SCOPE team developed a next generation digital intercom to provide even clearer communication between the CT operator and patient for optimal imaging results. The team implemented noise cancellation algorithms using a digital signal processing platform, designed a new mechanical enclosure for the operator console, and integrated electrical components to produce a functional prototype. They tested the prototype using a full-sized mockup of a CT scanner gantry, and evaluated design alternatives based on multiple criteria.
