Ideas Become Impact (IBI) is an Olin-sponsored, student-led initiative working to make STEM and artificial intelligence education engaging, inclusive, and within reach for every student.
Help Young People Turn Ideas Into Impact
Young people encounter AI and technology constantly, but many never receive the opportunity to understand how these systems work or imagine themselves as the people who can build them. IBI changes that by creating accessible, hands-on learning experiences through which students develop technical skills, confidence, and the ability to turn their own ideas into real-world projects.
Our programs introduce advanced concepts through approachable, tangible challenges. In one workshop, students use hardware sensors to measure and visualize their heart rates while learning about biological signals, data processing, and noise. In another, students train a computer-vision model to distinguish environmental waste from natural scenery, opening conversations about data quality, bias, and the ways technology can support environmental action.

IBI goes beyond one-time workshops. Our chapter model supports students in working on longer-term projects over several weeks or an entire semester. These projects can address needs students see in their own communities, such as environmental monitoring, health technology, food-access tools, or other applications of computing and engineering.
During IBI’s pilot chapter at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club, middle school students progressed from learning foundational concepts to developing a health-monitoring application of their own. Experiences like this help students see that STEM and AI are not distant or inaccessible fields. They are tools students can understand, shape, and use to make a difference.

IBI is now working to strengthen its curriculum, expand its chapter model, and build new partnerships with schools, libraries, youth centers, and community organizations. Our goal is to create programs that are engaging enough to spark curiosity, structured enough to build genuine skills, and flexible enough to work in communities with different resources and needs.
Your contribution could help us:
- Purchase sensors, microcontrollers, electronics, and reusable workshop equipment
- Provide individual material kits so cost does not prevent a student from participating
- Develop and test new STEM, engineering, and AI curricula
- Create facilitator guides and educator-training materials
- Recruit and train student instructors and chapter leaders
- Bring workshops to schools, libraries, and youth organizations
- Support longer-term student projects from initial idea through implementation
- Document and evaluate our programs so they can be improved and replicated

- $25 can provide basic workshop materials for one student.
- $100 can help purchase a reusable sensor or electronics kit.
- $500 can help equip a small hands-on workshop.
- $1,000 can support a multi-session program with a community partner.
- $2,500 can help IBI develop, pilot, and document a new curriculum module.
