Olin College of Engineering is pleased to announce the 13 sponsors of this year’s Senior Capstone Program in Engineering (SCOPE) projects.

SCOPE is a unique industry-university collaboration and is the largest of Olin’s three capstone tracks. Over the course of a full academic year, seniors work in multi-disciplinary teams to provide innovative solutions to a company’s real-world problems. Additionally, as students dive into these projects, they have the unique opportunity to apply their culminative skills and experience to complex industry projects.

The 2023-2024 academic year SCOPE projects are aligned, more than ever, with Olin’s strategic plan. Olin's strategic plan is grounded in impact-centered education, the idea that students can make an impact in the world while still studying. “SCOPE projects lead to outcomes that our sponsors use and apply to their businesses, which leads many sponsors to return year after year for the innovations delivered by Olin students,” says Sarah Bloomer, Visiting Professor & SCOPE Academic Director.

Five of the projects underway have a climate focus. In this impact area, SCOPE has four new sponsors: Avalanche Energy, LineVision, SparkCharge and Semtech. Fidelity Center for Applied Technology(sponsoring their 4th project) will focus on investing with an ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) focus.

Three companies are sponsoring projects focused on healthcare. New sponsor Moderna joins returning sponsors Pfizer and Boston Scientific. Pfizer is returning for their 5th project and Boston Scientific is returning for its 22nd project. Boston Scientific has sponsored a project every year since the Olin SCOPE program began, and sometimes more than one.

Additionally, New Balance has joined the group of sponsors focused on technical challenges in an industrial environment. Returning sponsors in this space include Amazon Robotics (8th project), Blue Origin (4th project) and Watts Water Technologies (7th project).

The Santos Family Foundation (10th project) is funding work with the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (6th project) to enhance and expand VIEW, a tool originally developed by a SCOPE team in 2017-18. The tool was recently used in research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

"Our sponsors identify challenges where they would benefit from an infusion of fresh ideas, expanded user understanding, and new technological approaches,” says Ruth Levine, Director of Strategic Industry Partnerships. “We work with our students to put together teams that are matched by skills and passion for each project.”
