Olin College named one of Fiske’s 20 Best Buy Colleges and Universities of 2023.

Fiske Guide to Colleges has designated Olin College of Engineering one of the 20 Best Buy Colleges and Universities of 2023. These are schools that, in the judgment of the editors, offer “outstanding educational value as determined by academic quality in relation to the net cost of attendance.”

An Oliner is writing on a table in a sticky-note filled classroom.

Fiske notes of the College, “This elite engineering school aims to turn out farsighted graduates who are not only technically competent but who can ‘come up with innovative ideas and products.’"

Fiske’s goes on to explain in more detail that Olin provides a rigorous curriculum where working in teams and across disciplines is the norm for not just students but faculty as well.  Fiske’s Guide notes that, “the curriculum is project-based, and students become as comfortable in the machine shop as in labs and classrooms.”

“This elite engineering school aims to turn out farsighted graduates who are not only technically competent but who can ‘come up with innovative ideas and products.’”

The Guide quotes multiple Olin students, including one senior who noted, “We work very hard, and we work a lot …but there’s no real feeling of anything but the friendliest competition.”

The 2-page excerpt for Olin notes that almost 70 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students and are led by professors, with whom students are typically on a first-name basis. Faculty, like students, the Guide notes, must go through an “extensive interview…process” and “many of them have been lured from the likes of MIT because they like the challenge of helping to create what one of them termed ‘the model of engineering for the future.’”

For 38 years, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has chosen a select group of schools noted for quality academic offerings and affordable cost for its annual Best Buy list. The tradition continues with the Fiske Guide to Colleges Best Buys of 2023, comprising twenty public and private colleges and universities.
