Design Justice Studio (DJS)
Founded 2011. Formerly Affordable Design and Entrepreneurship (ADE)
A space to work in the public interest, to take responsibility for societal outcomes, to practice courage to do the right thing.
Our goal as a design justice1 program is to realize collective care2 through mutual aid3 and public work4 , benefiting mission-driven organizations and communities with students learning to transform the circumstances perpetuating social and environmental injustice.5

Current Work
Over multiple years, teams of Olin, Babson, and Wellesley students collaborate with partners to make a positive difference, guided by an experienced faculty advisor, in five tracks: Air Quality, Community Development, Food Processing, Global Health, Just Energy.
Air Quality: Supporting EJ Communities in Their Work for Air Justice
Reducing the burden of air pollution in near-source communities by building awareness and capacity for agency.
Working in Galena Park, TX, with Environmental Community Advocates of Galena Park (ECAGP) and Air Alliance Houston. Advised by Scott Hersey and Francesca Majluf; Craig Bida supporting.
Community Development: Exposing Youth to Engineering Pathways
Working with local educators to create equitable access to hands-on learning opportunities for 11-18 year-olds that build self-confidence, invite creative self-expression, and inspire community action.
Working in Roxbury, MA, with Dearborn STEM Academy. Advised by Kofi Taha; Amon Millner and Craig Bida supporting.
Food Processing: Equipping Women with Food Processing Machines
Creating mini post-harvest processing machines accessible to women to reduce gender inequality, increase local food security, reduce burden, and grow small businesses.
Working in Kumasi, Ghana with QueenTech Initiative. Advised by Benjamin Linder; Craig Bida supporting.
Global Health: Identifying Early Hearing Loss to Improve Life Outcomes
Increasing early access to hearing screening devices to enhance immediate well-being of children and improve their overall life outcomes.
Working in Guatemala and Massachusetts with Solar Ear, CEDAF, Fundación Sonrisas Que Escuchan, Guatemala Partners, and Birth Matters Midwifery. Advised by Elizabeth Johansen; Craig Bida, Siddhartan Govindasamy, and Bradley Minch supporting.
Just Energy: Moving to Regenerative Energy Systems through Indigenous Just Transition Principles
Creating a renewed relationship to energy by design – one that integrates justice considerations, working with Indigenous tribal nations and communities.
Working in Massachusetts with Community Land and Water Coalition (CLWC) and North American Indian Center of Boston (NAICOB). Advised by Chhavi Goenka; Linda Vanasupa and Craig Bida supporting.
